U.S. Army Africa participates in African Land Forces Summit 2017

The United States and the Republic of Malawi will co-host the African Land Forces Summit (ALFS) 2017 to be held in Lilongwe, Malawi, May 8-11, 2017.

The United States and the Republic of Malawi will co-host the African Land Forces Summit (ALFS) 2017 to be held in Lilongwe, Malawi, May 8-11, 2017.

The summit is a weeklong seminar bringing together land force chiefs from across Africa for candid dialogue to discuss and develop cooperative solutions to regional and transregional challenges and threats.  Senior military leaders from across Africa will have the opportunity to solidify relationships, exchange information on current topics of mutual interest, and encourage cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

The theme for this year’s summit is “Enhancing Capacity Through Partnership in Africa.”

Land force chiefs from across the continent will participate in plenary sessions covering three main topics: critical war fighting and peacemaking skills, building logistics institutions to support military operations, and peacekeeping and peace support operations.  Representatives from the U.S. and several African militaries will lead participants in discussions on these subjects in detail during regionally themed breakout meetings.  Participants will also learn about the capabilities of the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) peacekeeping battalion and experience Malawian culture firsthand.

This is the fifth ALFS the United States has co-hosted along with partner militaries in Africa. Once the summit is complete, U.S. participants will return to their home station.
