U.S. Army Africa to host African Alumni Symposium

Vicenza, Italy – The commanding general of U.S. Army Africa, Maj. Gen. Joseph P. Harrington will host the African Alumni Symposium, at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, Carlisle, PA, Mar. 6-10, 2017. The symposium is a U.S. Africa Command event bringing together African alumni of U.S. Army professional military education schools, in order to strengthen U.S. and African partners’ relationships.

Senior officers from multiple African nations and the United States will participate in group discussions on this year’s theme of “Enhancing Capacity through Partnership in Africa,” and will cover topics that include developing the next generation of African leadership, addressing violent extremism across the continent, building partner capacity to enhance security, and the protection of civilians in military operations.

The symposium will also provide an opportunity for African alumni to network and build relationships. The last symposium was conducted at this location in December 2014 by U.S. Army Africa.

Once the symposium is complete, U.S. and African participants will return to their home stations.

It was way harder. Honestly, it felt more like Darth Vader shooting down rebel pilots. He might be the villain, but he’s also one of the best pilots in the galaxy.”
