VICENZA, Italy —

U.S. Army Africa held its third annual antiterrorism protection roundtable August 20-22 at the Golden Lion hall on Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.

During the roundtable, USARAF representatives discussed future protection-related events and theater security cooperation events that aim to strengthen partnerships and ensure the necessary security measures are involved in order for the events to be successful.

Protection experts from a 12 U.S. embassies in Africa, along with representatives from U.S. Africa Command, and subordinate components, to include experts from the United States Institute of Peace attended the event.

“The event allows us to engage our partners downrange and unify our protection efforts for the forces going down. We’re trying to eliminate the element of surprise,” said Mel Crandell, the USARAF antiterrorism division chief.

According to Crandell, leaders reviewed elements of protection such as antiterrorism, physical security, emergency management, force self-protection, counterintelligence and cyber protection.

USARAF uses this event to relay its priorities to the attendees and then receive guidance from the attendees.

“An event like this builds camaraderie,” Crandell said. “Going forward, this event will help solidify everything that we've been building over the last three years and hopefully make it better moving ahead. From a readiness perspective, it helps us power project protection to the continent and how we want to engage it.”
